Emergency Orthodontics

Fast Relief When You Need It Most

Varies

Orthodontic emergencies can happen at any time, whether from biting into hard food, a sports injury, or normal wear on your appliances. A broken bracket, a loose band, or a poking wire can cause significant discomfort and, if left unaddressed, may slow your treatment progress or lead to unwanted tooth movement. Our emergency orthodontic services are designed to provide prompt, effective care so you can get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible.

The most common orthodontic emergencies we see include brackets that have detached from a tooth, archwires that have slipped out of a bracket or are poking the soft tissues, loose or broken bands, and general soreness or irritation from appliances. While most of these situations are not medically dangerous, they can be uncomfortable and should be addressed promptly to keep your treatment moving in the right direction.

When you contact our office with an orthodontic concern, our team will triage the situation over the phone and provide immediate at-home instructions to manage your discomfort until we can see you. We stock all commonly needed replacement parts and materials, so repairs can typically be completed in a single visit without delay. For patients with clear aligners, we can address issues such as ill-fitting trays, lost aligners, and sharp aligner edges.

We encourage all of our orthodontic patients to keep a small emergency kit at home that includes orthodontic wax, a pencil eraser for repositioning wires, over-the-counter pain relief, and our office phone number. Being prepared can make a significant difference in your comfort if an issue arises outside of regular office hours.

What to Expect

When you experience an orthodontic emergency, the first step is to call our office. Our team will ask about your symptoms, determine the urgency, and provide step-by-step instructions for managing the issue at home until your appointment. We will schedule you as quickly as possible, often the same day or the next business day.

At your emergency visit, we will examine the affected area, assess any damage to your appliances, and perform the necessary repairs. This may include rebonding a bracket, replacing a broken band, trimming or replacing a wire, or adjusting your appliance to eliminate a source of irritation. Most emergency repairs can be completed in fifteen to thirty minutes. If additional parts need to be ordered, we will place a temporary fix to keep you comfortable in the meantime.

After the repair, we will review what caused the issue and provide tips to help prevent similar problems in the future. This may include dietary reminders, guidance on mouthguard use during sports, or adjustments to your oral hygiene technique around your appliances. Our goal is to resolve the immediate concern and help you avoid disruptions to your treatment timeline going forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common orthodontic emergencies include a broken or loose bracket, a poking or displaced archwire, a loose band, a wire that has slid out of position, mouth sores caused by appliance irritation, and significant pain or swelling that does not respond to over-the-counter remedies. If you experience any of these issues, contact our office so we can advise you on immediate steps and schedule a repair appointment.
If a wire is poking your cheek or gums, you can use a small piece of orthodontic wax to cover the sharp end and provide immediate relief. If the wire is long enough to bend, you can carefully use a pencil eraser or the back of a spoon to push it flat against the tooth. Avoid cutting the wire yourself, as small pieces could be accidentally swallowed or inhaled. Contact our office to schedule a repair as soon as possible.
A single loose or broken bracket is not usually a true emergency, but it should be repaired promptly to keep your treatment on track. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it is causing irritation. If it has come off completely, save it and bring it to your appointment. Call our office within one to two business days to schedule a rebonding.
We make every effort to accommodate orthodontic emergencies as quickly as possible, often on the same day or next business day. When you call, our team will assess the urgency of your situation and provide guidance on what to do in the meantime. For after-hours concerns, our voicemail will include instructions for reaching us in case of a true emergency.
